RANDAL J. KIRK
Senior Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Third Security
Mr. Kirk founded Third Security in March 1999 and has served as its Chief Executive Officer since that time. In 1984, Mr. Kirk co-founded General Injectables & Vaccines, Inc. and served as Chairman of the Board prior to the 1998 sale of the company. Mr. Kirk also co-founded King Pharmaceuticals, Inc. in 1993. Additionally, in 1996 Mr. Kirk founded and became Chairman of the Board of New River Pharmaceuticals Inc. (previously traded on NASDAQ prior to its acquisition by Shire plc in 2007) and was President and Chief Executive Officer between October 2001 and April 2007.
Mr. Kirk has served as a member of the Board of Directors of Clinical Data, Inc. since 2002 and as Chairman of the Board since 2004, as a member of the Board of Directors of Halozyme Therapeutics, Inc. since May 2007, as Chairman of the Board of Directors of Intrexon Corporation since February 2008 and as Chairman of the Board of Directors of Cyntellect, Inc. since September 2008. Mr. Kirk served as a member of the Board of Directors of Scios, Inc. (previously traded on NASDAQ prior to its acquisition by Johnson & Johnson) between February 2000 and May 2002.
Mr. Kirk began his professional career in the private practice of law. He has served on the Board of Visitors of Radford University since July 2003, was Rector of the Board from September 2006 to September 2008, and has served on the Board of Directors of the Radford University Foundation, Inc. since September 1998. He was appointed to the Virginia Advisory Council on Revenue Estimates in July 2006 and was appointed as a member of the Board of Directors of the Virginia University Research Partnership in July 2007. Mr. Kirk received a B.A. in Business from Radford University and a J.D. from the University of Virginia.
H. THOMAS WATKINS
President and Chief Executive Officer, Human Genome Sciences
Mr. Watkins joined HGS as Chief Executive Officer and a Director in December 2004, and was also named President in December 2005. Mr. Watkins came to HGS with nearly twenty years of experience at Abbott Laboratories and its affiliates in the U.S. and Asia. He joined Abbott in 1985 and held various executive positions in the Pharmaceutical Products Division, Diagnostics Division and HealthSystems Division prior to serving as President of TAP Pharmaceutical Products, Inc., from 1998 to 2004.
Mr. Watkins began his career in 1974 with Arthur Andersen & Co., and was a management consultant with McKinsey and Company, Inc., from 1979 to 1985. Mr. Watkins holds a bachelor’s degree from the College of William and Mary, and a master’s degree in business administration from the University of Chicago Graduate School of Business. He is a member of the Board of Directors of Vanda Pharmaceuticals, Inc., the Biotechnology Industry Organization (BIO), the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, and the National Symphony Orchestra. He is a Trustee of The College of William and Mary Foundation and a member of the Board of Trustees of The Mason School of Business of The College of William and Mary. Mr. Watkins currently serves as Chair of the Life Sciences Advisory Board of the State of Maryland, and is a member of the Board of Visitors of the University of Maryland Biotechnology Institute.
TONY ZOOK
President, MedImmune
Tony Zook was appointed president of MedImmune in November 2008. He is also responsible for all of AstraZeneca’s North American businesses as CEO of AZ North America, including MedImmune, the AZ U.S. Business, and AZ Canadian Business.
Mr. Zook began his pharmaceutical career in 1983 at Berlex Laboratories, where he held various positions, including district sales manager, marketing director, vice president-national accounts, and vice president-sales.
Mr. Zook joined Astra USA in 1997 as vice president-marketing and sales, two years before the merger of Astra AB and Zeneca Group Plc in 1999. Prior to becoming president and CEO for AstraZeneca’s U.S. Business in 2006, Mr. Zook was senior vice president of commercial operations responsible for leading the company’s marketing and sales organizations in the United States. He has also held various other positions in AstraZeneca’s sales and marketing organization.
Mr. Zook earned a bachelor’s degree in biology from Frostburg University, and an associate’s degree in chemical engineering from Pennsylvania State University. Mr. Zook is a member of the board for First State Innovation, the Pennsylvania Division of the American Cancer Society and is a member of the Board of Trustees for the Healthcare Leadership Council.
